Charles W. "Red" Auer, age 90, of Erie, died Friday, January 20, 2012 at St. Vincent Health Center. Born in Erie, November 25, 1921, he was a son of the late William Auer and the late Mildred Phillips. Charles was raised in Erie by his mother and his step-father, the late Charles Phillips.
Charles served during WWII as a combat engineer with the U.S. Army 308th Engineer Battalion, Company A and received several awards, including the Purple Heart. He worked as an assembler at American Sterilizer for 42 years and was later president of the retirees club. Charles was recording secretary for his union, U.A.W. Local #832. He enjoyed travelling and golfing.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters, Eugenia McDaniel, Martha Struchen and Eleanor Shedd; 3 brothers, Ardell Auer, William Auer Jr. and David Phillips.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Eleanor (Weiss) Auer; 2 daughters, Janice Stallings, of Virginia Beach, VA and Patricia Parrish, husband Nollie, of Orlando, FL; 2 grandsons, PFC Charles Parrish, of Ft. Bragg, N.C. and Alexander Parrish, of Orlando, FL; 2 sisters, Betty Jackson, husband Richard, of Erie and Lilia Clisby, of Melbourne, FL; a brother-in-law, Ed Struchen.
Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 W. 38th St., at Greengarden Blvd., Monday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 and to attend prayers there, Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, at 10 a.m.. Entombment will follow in Holy Family Mausoleum at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
