Marie Amelia Mintzer Erdely, 93, passed away peacefully, Friday, January 27, 2012 after an extended illness. Born on August 20, 1918 in Erie, Pennsylvania, she is the daughter of the late Harry and Mary Mintzer.
She graduated from East High School and married William J. Erdely on October 12, 1940. Marie and Bill loved to travel by car throughout the United States, Vancouver Island, and Canada. At age 70, Marie traveled to visit her granddaughter in Germany.
Marie was a founding member of Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church, where she and Bill helped with many festivals, dinners and fundraisers. She was a member of the Rosary-Altar Society, was a Girl Scout Leader and also worked in the school cafeteria.
Marie loved to sew and made many of her own clothes as well as her daughter's. Many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren wore the christening gown that she made and her white, crocheted bedspreads, that took her many hours to make, were treasured by her family.
Her gardens were a work in progress. She turned the clay ground on Evanston Avenue into beautiful flower beds of colorful blooms, especially roses. Marie came from a family of wonderful cooks and bakers. Her potato salad recipe is legend among friends and family. She also made sure that the cookie container was always full for the grandchildren who made that a first stop when visiting Gram and Gramp.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Miller and her husband Richard of Girard, PA; grandchildren, Patty Schenker and Tiffany Brandon, both of Erie, PA, Heather Franco, husband Troy of Tecumseh, MI, Julie DePhillips, husband Jim of Macungie, PA, Tim Miller, wife Allison of Bristow, Virginia, Andy Miller of Whitehall, PA, and Jonathan Erdely of Palm Coast, FL. Also survived by great-grandchildren, Morgan Schenker, Erie, PA, Claire and Owen Franco, Tecumseh, MI, Sophia and Jonathan DePhillips, Macungie, PA, Ella Miller, Whitehall PA, and Noah Miller, Bristow, VA. Marie was pleased to know that her eighth great-grandchild would be born to the Tim Miller family in March 2012. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews, as well as her wonderful and devoted sister, Bertha Praetzel. Throughout her life Marie was blessed to have many friendships that brought her much joy.
Marie was proceeded in death by husband William; sons, Billy and Dennis Erdely; parents Harry and Mary Mintzer; and sister, Rita Belknap.
The family would like to thank all of her second family at Sarah Reed Retirement Center for their love and care of our Mom and Grandma. May God bless you and keep you close all the days of your life. Thank you, too, to VNA Hospice for your care and compassion during the short time that we knew you.
