Marie E. (Hafenstiner) Smith

          Marie E. (Hafenstiner) Smith, age 94, of Erie, passed away Monday, August 7, 2017 at St. Mary’s Home of Erie.  Born in Erie on April 9, 1923 she was a daughter of August and Katherine (Sohl) Hafenstiner.

          Marie was a lifelong member of Holy Rosary Church where she was president of the Altar Rosary Society and also a member at St. Francis Xavier Church in McKean later in life.  She was very active at all Church functions both in Erie and Florida.  She worked for many years at Ricardo’s before retirement.

          Above all else, Marie’s main focus was her family.  She can be described as “the best mother ever” by her children and always enjoyed being with her family.

          Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Jack H. Smith who died in 2001; two brothers, Thomas and Robert Hafenstiner; and a daughter-in-law, Mary Jo Smith.

          Survivors include her children, Jack Smith, Ronald Smith, wife Linda, Diane Chaplain, husband Michael, Greg Smith, wife Barbara, and Marilyn Shields, husband John; grandchildren, Christopher Smith, wife Amy, Daniel Smith, wife Jeanne, Bethany Spence, husband Timothy, Meghan Detwiler, husband Jeremy, Geoffrey Chaplain, wife Kristy, Griffin Smith and Victoria, Emily Whittle, husband Christopher, Graysya Redenbach, and Ashley Bush; great-grandchildren, Zachary, Riley, DJ, and Kathrine Smith, Jadon, Landon, and Payton Swop, Ethan and Jack Detwiler, Benjamin, Adrienne, and Kennedy Chaplain, Waylon Whittle, Nathan and Natalie Spence, Xavier Wright, Jasmine and Aurora, and Paige Redenbach; and 5 great-great grandchildren.

          Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 East 38th St. Further visitation will be held on Saturday from 9 a.m. until the time of a funeral mass at 10 a.m. Holy Rosary Church, 2801 East Avenue.  Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery.
