James P. “Jim” Franz, Jr., age 78, of Erie, passed away Wednesday, March 7, 2018 at UPMC Hamot.  Born May 9, 1939 in Erie he was a son of the late Verna M. (Jackson) and James P. Franz, Sr.


Jim was a graduate of the McDowell High School class of 1958.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged as Airman 2nd Class.  He worked at General Electric for nearly 34 years before his retirement in 1999.  He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church and was once a member of the Blessed Sacrament Ushers Club.  He was also a life member of the Times News Old Newsies, the American Legion Post #773, the Zukor Club, and the Siebenbuerger Club.  He volunteered for the Flagship Niagara League and Maritime Museum.  Jim was also a very knowledgeable train enthusiast, enjoyed going to the casino & was a regular blood donor. 


Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn L. (Taccone) Franz in 2008 & two brothers, Richard & Timothy Franz.


Survivors include a son, James P. Franz, III, wife Michele, of Erie; a daughter, Yvonne Hendrickson, husband Scott, of Erie; two grandchildren, Tami Marie (Franz) Withers and Jenna Grace Hendrickson; three great grandchildren, Emory, Kayleigh, and Tori; a sister, Susan Franz; and his extended family and loved ones.


Friends may call on Sunday March 11th from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th St. at Greengarden Blvd.  Services will be held there on Monday March 12th at 9:30 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at 10 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Church, 1626 West 26th St.  Burial will follow at Erie County Memorial Gardens.


In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Shriner’s Hospital for Children, the Flagship Niagara League, the Erie City Mission, or a local charity of one’s choice.
