Alan J. Mele, age 66, of Erie, passed away on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. He was born in Erie, Pa., on November 14, 1951, son of the late Attilio and Santa Rose (Sandy) Longo Mele.

Alan graduated from McDowell High School in 1969, and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Accommodation Medal for Sharp Shooter and the Vietnam Service Medal.

He was the proud owner of Mele Plumbing and Heating Co. Inc., since 1986, and served as president of the Master Plumbers Association of Erie in 2008. He was a member of the Manufacturer & Business Association and the Builders Association and was a strong advocate for young people to explore careers in the trade and technical fields.

Family was at the center of Alan’s life and his love for his family was evident in all he did. He always was generous with his time and talents and could build anything and fix anything. An avid motorcyclist, Alan rode to Sturgis, South Dakota, with friends and family. He supported and volunteered his time and skills at Roar on the Shore each year for the past 12 years. He was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Roman Catholic Church.

He is survived by his wife Cheryl A. (Pontillo) Mele and children, Vincent A. Mele of Orlando, Anthony P. Mele of Erie, and stepchildren Danielle and her husband, Mark Woods, and James Cicero, all of Erie. He is further survived by four grandchildren, Ghino Cicero, Rome Cicero, Hailey Woods and Julio Cicero. Alan also is survived by two brothers, Charles and his wife, Karen Mele, of Erie, and Mark and his wife, Laura Mele, of Atlanta, as well as five brothers-in-law, Tom (Paula) Pontillo, Angelo (Kimberly) Pontillo, Ralph (Dana) Pontillo, Pasquale (Denise) Pontillo, and Mario (Mary) Pontillo. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Friends may call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Boulevard on Monday from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and are invited to attend a prayer service at the funeral home Tuesday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at Blessed Sacrament Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
