          Russell P. “Papa” Cerami, Sr., age 89, of Erie, went home to his Lord and Savior, after a lifetime of service to others, Monday, October 8, 2018. Born in Erie, October 3, 1929, he was a son of the late Russell J. and Frances M. (Concilla) Cerami.

          Russell was a graduate of Strong Vincent High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and proudly served as a Sergeant during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska. He later worked as a firefighter for the City of Erie for 34 years and was president of the state union for 17 years and a vice president of the International Association of Firefighters, for 12 years.

          He was a member of Holy Rosary Church. He enjoyed golfing, playing piano, going to the casino with his wife and playing penny slots, and bowling. He was the oldest bowler in Erie to bowl a perfect 300 at the age of 84. He was the captain of the family boat Im-a-Rec. He was a big fan of Notre Dame football and all Boston sports teams. He was a baseball coach for Erie Little League.

          He was very engaging and kind to everyone he met. He was very well known in this part of the country for his contributions to fire departments.

          In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Cerami.

          He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Doris C. (Adelhardt) Cerami; two sons, Russel P. Cerami, Jr., wife Tammy, of Harmony, Pa., and David C. Cerami (Cyndi Kuneman), of Erie; four grandchildren, Jennifer and Rachel Cerami, Jennifer Barlekoff, husband Sam, and Nicole Kuneman; three great-grandchildren, Jason and Connor Jagta, and Emma Kuneman. He is further survived by several nieces and nephews.

          Friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, Pine Avenue Branch, 845 E. 38th St., Friday, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and may attend prayers there, Saturday at 9:20 a.m., followed by a funeral Mass at Holy Rosary Church at 10 a.m. Committal Services, with full military honors, will follow in the Mausoleum at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
