John J Kozlowski, 86, passed away on Saturday October 6th, 2018, at his home. He was born in Edinboro Pa, on May 14th,1932 to the late Sabin and Lottie Borawski Kozlowski.

John got a kick out of telling the story of how he was born in the family barn while his mother was milking cows. Business was in his DNA from an early age as his family owned and operated small grocery stores on the east side of Erie. In fact, John often snuck out of kindergarten while others were napping to work in the store. John established himself, at the age of 16. He leased and purchased his own land for Truck Gardening after being inspired by his mother’s strong knowledge of property value. Many fond stories included him driving around the clock to and from Pittsburgh delivering his and the families produce to market. He graduated from North East High School in 1950. Upon graduation John received a scholarship from Future Farmers of America, which led him to Penn State University’s School of Agricultural Sciences. He was then drafted into the Army where he was a part of both the engineering and pistol teams. At one-point John’s energetic personality earned him a spot on the Ed Sullivan Show in an Army short film. After his service stateside, he returned to the family’s farms and his personal acreages. At various times he owned grape vineyards in the North East and Harborcreek areas. He loved the grape vineyards and would pick his own grapes annually right up to this last season. John rarely sat still, unless he was eating an ice cream cone, and during the winter months he turned his attentions to woodworking and construction. Along with his ventures in building many custom homes he also acquired rental properties. He held his real estate broker’s license and was very successful with it. Somehow John also found time to serve as Sheriff’s Deputy. In the following years he owned Bernard Brick, and O-kay Trucking and Auto Sales along with numerous other business ventures. Through all his endeavors John enjoyed a reputation of being an honest and hardworking man. Everything John did, he did with precision and a keen eye. He was incredibly generous when it came to his family, Bobbie, and their beloved dogs. He was loved and cherished by many and will forever hold a special place in our hearts. His affinity for hugs and his quick wit were known by all and you could count yourself incredibly lucky if you were on the receiving end of either of these. He will be loved and missed always.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Stanley and Walter Kozlowski, his sisters Irene Yuskovic and Helen Pietruszak, his step-son David Frangione and grandson Ryan Frangione.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Bobbie Kozlowski of Fairview, his son, John Kozlowski II, and his wife Katie, their daughters Zoe, Ella, India Kozlowski, and Riley Murray of Boise, ID., his daughter, Tracie Roeder and her husband Brent, their children Benjamin and Caroline and her family of Grand Falls, MT, step-son Steve Frangione, and his wife Kristine, their daughters Stephanie and Kai Frangione of Fairview Pa, and many nieces and nephews.

Friends and family are invited to call on Friday from 2 to 5 pm and 6 to 9 pm at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street at Greengarden Blvd. All are welcome to attend a celebration of John’s life at St. Jude the Apostle Church, 2801 West 6th Street, on Saturday at 10 am.
