Samuel R. Ward Jr., M.D., 55 of Erie, passed away Saturday December 29, 2018. He was born in Bethesda, Md., July 12, 1963 a son of Barbara (Brandt) Ward of Nellysford, Va., and the late Samuel R. Ward, Sr.

 

As a young man, Sam was an accomplished student, athlete and leader. He studied biochemistry at the University of Virginia and became a Doctor of Medicine through studies at the Medical College of Virginia. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Duke University Medical Center, where he was Assistant Chief Resident. Sam completed his Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic. In 1997, Sam moved to Erie and joined Saint Vincent Consultants in Cardiovascular Diseases. Most recently, he served as Director of Cardiac Cath Labs and Chair of the Quality Committee for the Saint Vincent Cardiovascular Institute. An exceptional cardiologist, Sam found his greatest professional fulfillment building relationships while providing comfort and care to his patients and their families.

 

Sam was a keen outdoorsman, prolific traveler, and award-winning photographer, capturing beautiful landscapes and sunrises across five continents. Throughout his life, Sam found great peace and beauty in the natural world. In 1986 he married his college sweetheart, Cheryl (Mowrer) Ward, who was a source of strength and happiness throughout his life. Shortly after moving to Erie, Sam found lifelong friends in the family of Tom and Cheryl Vicary. Sam quickly became a valued member of the Erie community and a friend to all he met. Everyone who met Sam was won over by his infectious energy, easygoing sense of humor, and deep compassion towards all. He was a great supporter of the arts, an avid sports fan and dog lover. Sam took great happiness and pride in his two children, Alec and Audrey, and was always the strongest supporter of their educational, athletic, and artistic pursuits. Sam enjoyed taking vacations and trips with his family, as well as the quieter moments spent on walks, reading together, or just laughing around dinner. Sam was a constant source of light and comfort to family, friends, and all who knew him. He will always be dearly missed but deeply loved.

 

In addition to his mother, Barbara, survivors include his wife of 32 years Cheryl (Mowrer) Ward, one son; Alec Ward, one daughter Audrey Ward all of Erie, his brother Jeff Ward, and his wife Lisa of Richmond, Va., and his sister Katie Michel, and her husband Jeff of Warrenton, Va., his mother and father in law, Ron and Faye Mowrer of Lancaster, Pa, and sister in law Cindy Brown, also of Lancaster. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
