John W. Kaminski, 95, of Erie, passed away Monday, May 6, 2013 at the St. Mary's Home of Erie. He was born in Erie on November 13, 1917, a son of the late Alexander and Rosalia (Krzywicka) Kaminski.
John was a graduate of East High School. Active in sports he was the Captain of the East High Football Team in 1935 and also played basketball and ran track. He served in the U. S. Navy during World War II. He was employed at the Erie General Electric as a lathe operator from 1940 ? 42, worked at the Larson and Kaminski News downtown Erie from 1945 to the mid 70's and later at the PA Soldiers' & Sailors' Home in Security for 10 years. He was a founding member of St. Luke Catholic Church and the church's Funtastics Group. He was a life member of the Polish Falcons Nest 610 where he received the Bronze Legion Award and Silver Legion Award and a Lifetime Achievement Award for 80 years of service to the Polish Falcons Nest 610 and the Erie Community. He was also a member of the East Erie Turners, the Siebenbuerger Club and the East High Athletic Booster, for 60 years. He enjoyed bowling in the Eastland Senior League and was an avid golfer.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet Kanonczyk Kaminski; three sisters, Elsie Kaminski, Adeline Ulecki and Stella Grabowski; three brothers, Joseph, Alois and Leo Kaminski, and a son- in-law; David MacKrell. He is survived by two daughters, Carole Petrungar and her husband, Frank and Barbara MacKrell both of Erie; two grandchildren, Matthew John MacKrell of Erie and Mark Thomas MacKrell of New York City; two sisters-in-law; Dolores Kaminski and Agnes Kanonczyk. Many nieces and nephews also survive.
Friends may call at the Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, LLP. Pine Ave. Branch, 845 East 38th St., on Thursday from 2:00 to 5:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM and are invited to attend a prayer service at the funeral home on Friday at 9:30 AM followed by a funeral mass at St. Luke Church at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The Kaminski family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of St. Mary's Home ? East for the care that they gave to John. Memorials may be made to the St. Luke Church.
